About the Lewis Center
The Ralph & Goldy Lewis Center for Regional Policy Studies advances research solutions for California’s urban and regional challenges, with an emphasis on three interconnected subject areas:
Founded in 1988 as a research center of the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs, we are dedicated to the interdisciplinary study and understanding of urban and regional policy issues affecting California. We support high-quality scholarly research, offer public programs and events, conduct a wide range of research studies, and provide accessible publications of our research findings. We strive to make our research and activities accessible and responsive to policymakers, opinion leaders, public officials, and the general community. The work of the Lewis Center is guided by an advisory board comprised of prominent public- and private-sector leaders.
A commitment to public service
Every year, the Lewis Center sponsors public lectures and seminars, convenes conferences to stimulate intellectual debate and dialogue including the prestigious annual Arrowhead Symposium, and organizes workshops to engage and educate public officials and decision-makers. Researchers frequently deliver briefings and testimony to elected officials and community groups, provide media interviews, and advise both public- and private-sector leaders. The Lewis Center advisory board includes members from both UCLA and the wider community to ensure that our programs and research are responsive, timely, and effective.
Research on critical issues in California
A vital research arm of UCLA and the Luskin School, the Lewis Center involves over 90 faculty members and numerous graduate students from schools and departments throughout the university, including economics, public health, political science, and environmental sciences. Research grants now total more than $5 million, and the Lewis Center frequently sponsors distinguished visiting fellows and scholars, and collaborates with researchers at other California universities and research institutes. The Lewis Center is located in the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs building in the northeast section of the UCLA campus, adjacent to the Murphy Sculpture Garden.
